Floral Art
ADVICE
From fresh to handmade, there are a variety of different options when choosing floral arrangements. So which is best for your cake?
SPRING is my favourite season of the year. My window boxes have been planted and are full of bright, bold, beautiful flowers, ready to inspire me.
Nature offers so much inspiration. The shapes, the colours, the textures. And nothing says beauty like a cake adorned with nature's art.
My preference for floral cake decorations has always been handmade flowers. Partly because making them is one of my biggest passions.
There are a variety of mediums to choose from. But which is the most suitable option for your cake?
Fresh Flowers
No doubt, these are stunning. So many varieties and colours to choose from!
However, it is important to know that although some flowers (specifically grown for the purpose) are considered edible, most varieties are not. In fact, some are toxic and can cause health problems if ingested.
Flowers are often treated with pesticides, and may be contaminated with dirt, bugs and bacteria, compromising the safety of the cake...and your guests!
Many cake decorators make the most beautiful creations with the inclusion of fresh florals, so if you opt for these, just be sure to asks questions in order check they are being used safely.
Many bakers that use these have the understanding of which flowers are safe to use, how to reduce any risks associated with using them and have access to reputable suppliers. But I am no florist! As a result I have taken the decision not to use fresh florals on my cakes.
So what are the alternatives?
Sugar Flowers
So much detail can be achieved using this medium, producing beautiful, realistic blooms.
It is delicate, intricate work, but the results are worth it! This is reflected in the cost, as the time and skill needed to recreate your chosen florals should not be underestimated.
From strong, bold colours to the more subtle pastels, practically any colour can be achieved.
These are fragile though. So fragile! One slight knock and it could be game over, so great care needs to be taken with these. (This is just one of the reasons I'd always recommend your cake decorator delivers and sets up your wedding cake at your chosen venue. But that is for another blog)!
Stored correctly, these can last for years, providing a beautiful memento of your special day.
Wafer Paper
Such a versatile medium, which lends itself perfectly to creating flowers, as it is easily coloured, cut and shaped.
So lightweight, your cake can be adorned with as many beautiful blooms as you like, without the fear of your cake collapsing under the weight!
Just be mindful of humidity though. No-one wants a wilted flower on their centrepiece!
Although technically an edible medium, I would usually advise against consuming handmade flowers, due to the possible inclusion of inedible centres and wires...I feel another blog in the writing!
Crepe Paper
A more recent medium I've been exploring. But when you love something, you just know!
Versatile, lightweight, flexible and durable. The perfect option to elevate your cake to the next level.
Offering texture and movement, crepe paper flowers can give realism to your blooms, without the fear of them breaking.
Ok, so not edible, but as I've said, I don't recommend eating handmade flowers anyway.
And when your celebration is over, why not pop them in a vase on your table as a beautiful centrepiece. They can retain their beauty for years... and there will be no wilting petals!
Artificial / Silk
Safe, durable and versatile, silk flowers and foliage are a great budget friendly option.
If you are using artificial blooms for your table decorations and/or bouquet, it can ensure your cake matches perfectly with your decor.
